KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho – One Spokane man was killed in an airplane crash, deputies from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.
Deputies responded to a forested area near Horsehaven after getting word of a plane crash around 3:00 p.m.
The downed plane was about 25 yards up a steep embankment on Forest Service Road 794.
Deputies confirmed that the pilot, later identified as Kenneth D. Chapman, 70, of Spokane, died at the scene.
Chapman was the only occupant in his 1966 Cessna 185 plane when, for an unknown reason, he crashed into the hillside, officials said.
Detectives are investigating the cause of the crash and investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate as well.
