Coeur d'Alene credit union did right thing by hiring guard, says employee who heard shooting

Salias Dobbs said he and his coworkers were confused as to what was going on at the time and barricaded themselves in their insurance office. It was on the second level above the bank in this office building.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Witnesses who heard a deadly Coeur d’Alene credit union shooting on Saturday are speaking out about the incident.

Coeur d’Alene Police said a former employee of the Global Credit Union in Coeur d'Alene showed up with a gun. Then, he was shot and killed by a security guard. Employees at neighboring businesses said they are shocked.

Salias Dobbs said he and his coworkers were confused as to what was going on at the time and barricaded themselves in their insurance office. It was on the second level above the bank in this office building. He said he applauds the bank for having that security guard there.

"And then all the sudden, we just kind of realized that sounds like gunshots," he said.

Those bullets coming from a security guard inside the bank who was brought there due to statements made by Joshua Martz. The credit union said Martz was a manager there but left the job just a few months in after clashing with coworkers.

"As we turned the corner a little bit more, and looked over, we could see a trail of blood going out the exit," Dobbs said.

From their view now, a piece of paper covered up a bullet hole, Dobbs said. He said after the shooting, he and coworkers locked the doors, turned off the lights, and went to another room.

"We all just kind of hid back there, locked everything and just huddled in that corner, said a prayer," he explained.

Everything would turn out to be okay for them, all things considered. Martz was the only one to die and no one else was injured.

"I applaud Global Credit Union for noticing those things and saying, ‘Hey, let's hire a security guard because this gave us some indication that he could do something.’ Had that security guard not been there, I think that this would have been a whole different story," he explained.

Police said they, along with the FBI, are still investigating the shooting. At this point, it's still being investigated as an attempted robbery, based on what evidence police have. They said Martz did not fire his gun during the incident.
