MOSES LAKE, Wash --- A Grant County deputy shot his wife on Wednesday night. The deputy called 911 to report he had accidentally shot his wife.
Jose A. Rivera, 28, was off duty at the time of the shooting. His wife, Sydney A. Rivera, 25, had one gunshot wound and was conscious while she was taken to the hospital.
She told police the incident was not domestic violence related, and is currently listed in stable condition.
Moses Lake PD said in a release that Rivera had been “handling a firearm when it discharged, striking Sydney one time.”
Investigators said the Riveras’ four-month-old had been in the room at the time of the shooting. They said it does not indicate that alcohol and/or drugs were involved in the incident.
Jose Rivera has worked for the Grant County Sheriff’s Office since last January as a patrol deputy, according to Moses Lake PD. Previously, he worked for the Royal City Police Department.
Moses Lake PD said Rivera is a member of the US Marshal’s Violent Offender Task Force and the Moses Lake Regional Tactical Response team.
