December Snapchat post threatened 'something bad might happen today' at West Valley HS: docs

The threats were made against Spokane's West Valley High School on Dec. 4, 2018. Similar threats were made against East Valley High School the day before.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A search warrant filed in Spokane County Superior Court shows the content of social media threats made against West Valley High School on Dec. 4, 2018.

According to the warrant, a Snapchat account messaged a 15-year-old WVHS student a little before 7 a.m. on Dec. 4, 2018. The messages came from an account that added the student shortly before they started sending messages, documents show.

The warrant does not identify a suspected individual behind the account.

The receiving user did not screenshot the first message but told police it said, "Watch out West Valley High School something bad might happen today," followed by gun and bomb emojis, according to the warrant.

The next message, which was saved via screenshot, said, "Like I said buddy be careful," followed by winky-face and gun emojis. The third message, which was also saved, read, "It may not be today but it will be tomorrow," followed by a skull-and-crossbones emoji, according to the warrant.

Spokane County Deputy Edward Cashman, who is investigating the threats, said in the warrant that the threats "may have been inspired by [the] East Valley High School threat" made the day before.

The warrant is asking for data relating to the conversation, including messages and message logs. The crime being investigated is threat to bomb or injure property, a class B felony.
