Worker at WIAA Hardwood Classic in Tacoma tests positive for coronavirus

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department said there was a low risk to others at the event.

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) has announced that a worker at the 3A/4A Hardwood Classic in Tacoma March 4-7 has been diagnosed with COVID-19, more commonly known as coronavirus.

The worker tested positive on March 13, and health officials have determined that the first day the worker could have been contagious was March 7, the last day of the tournament, according to the WIAA. The worker first showed symptoms on March 9.

The Mt. Spokane girls as well as the Central Valley boys and girls all took part in the 4A/3A Tournament on March 7th. The Mt. Spokane boys team also showed up to support their girls squad.

The WIAA said it has been working to notify those who came into contact with the individual, and that it is unaware of any other workers showing signs of coronavirus.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department determined that there was a low risk of transmission to those at the tournament, according to the WIAA.

So far in Washington, there have been 37 deaths and 568 confirmed cases of coronavirus. In total, 6,001 people have also tested negative for the virus.

Governor Jay Inslee announced the closure of all public and private K-12 schools in Washington on March 13 after previously closing schools in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties.
