CHENEY, Wash. — A resident of a skilled nursing facility in Cheney who has tested positive for COVID-19 is hospitalized.

Cheney Care Center was notified on Wednesday that the resident, who was hospitalized on March 30, had tested positive, according to a letter from executive director Keith Fauerso. The resident is in quarantine at a local hospital.

According to Fauerso, there are no confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19 at the nursing facility, but residents are being closely monitored.

“At this time, our focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents and our employees. Staff are our key partners in keeping themselves and our residents healthy,” Fauerso wrote, adding that staff will continue to use infection control training and practices that have already been implemented.

The nursing facility is in “constant contact” with the Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) and its medial director is following their direction, Fauerso added.

On Friday, March 20, leaders with SRHD told KREM that one patient with coronavirus lives at a retirement home in Spokane Valley.

At that time, the person was in isolation in their apartment at Holman Gardens. SRHD spokesperson Kelli Hawkins said staff were taking precautions, and following guidelines issued by the health district and Gov. Jay Inslee.

As of Thursday morning, there have been five deaths among 181 coronavirus cases in Spokane County. Thirty people are hospitalized.
