'Lion King' cancelations extended through Dec. 29

Denver Center for the Performing Arts said people involved in the show tested positive before Sunday night's show.

DENVER — Performances of "The Lion King" at the Buell Theatre in Denver have been canceled through Wednesday, Dec. 29 after people involved in the production tested positive for COVID-19.

According to a release from the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA), negative testing allowed the matinee performance on Sunday, Dec. 19 to go forward.

But DCPA said breakthrough cases were later detected within the company, forcing the cancelation of the Sunday evening performance. DCPA later canceled Monday's shows, and then all shows through Dec. 26 and later extended that closure through Wednesday.

DCPA said performances are anticipated to resume Thursday, Dec. 30.

The following shows have been canceled:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (previously announced)
  • Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 7:30 p.m. (previously announced)
  • Thursday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (previously announced)
  • Friday, Dec. 24 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (previously announced)
  • Sunday, Dec. 26 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. (previously announced)
  • Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Dec. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

“With health and safety at the forefront and knowing many of our patrons have holiday plans, out of an abundance of caution 'The Lion King' company and the DCPA have decided to cancel these performances," said John Ekeberg, executive director for DCPA Broadway & Cabaret, in a statement. "It is upsetting for everyone involved and these decisions do not come lightly. We appreciate everyone for their understanding and patience as we all navigate this together with wellness as the priority.”

All tickets for those performances will be refunded, DCPA said. An email with refund information will be sent to ticket-holders. Those who bought tickets through third-party sellers should contact them directly for refund information.
