It only takes a few minutes of meandering through a local animal shelter to be hooked.  The sad eyes seeking mine through the bars hit me square in the heart each time I visit.   There is often no explanation for why they ended up on the streets or at a shelter.  And the explanation often wouldn’t have much to do with the dogs, but rather with the people who let them go.  And at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter.  They are sweet, scruffy, and so loveable that it just begs the question, ‘what can we do?’

That’s essentially how the KREM 2 Red CarPET Event was born.  Each week KREM 2 features an animal in need on our Pick of the Litter segment.  We see big and small dogs come through the building looking for a new start and a loving home.  KREM 2 viewers always rise to the challenge.  We wanted to celebrate that effort and mark the occasion with something grand.  Thus, the Red CarPET Event was created.

“Lots of dogs, and a red carpet.  What could go wrong?”, said a KREM 2 employee.  For the last two years we've gathered news cameras, dogs, and volunteers and created a show.  We thought each dog should have their moment to shine and walk a red carpet.   And shine they did.  With the help of local businesses to underwrite the cost of adoptions, dozens of dogs went home with new families.  Dozens of families expanded by one furry friend.

Now it’s time to do it again!  Spokanimal and KREM 2 are teaming up to host this years KREM 2 Red CarPET Event in Downtown Spokane.  Cameras will be rolling for the adoption event being held at River Park Square. Terry's Truck Center is underwriting the cost of the first 20 dogs.  That means, the adoption fees for those dogs will be waived. The families will just have to pay for a license.

Many of the dogs are flown to the Inland Northwest through the non-profit Wings of Rescue.  The group is dedicated to rescuing animals from crowded shelters and bringing them to places where there is a greater chance of adoption.  We say thank you to ‘Wings of Rescue’ and encourage you to visit the website.  https://wingsofrescue.org/

So, here’s how it works.  We will host a ‘meet and greet’ from 5 p.m. — 6 p.m. at River Park Square.  Dogs will be stationed throughout the first floor to meet their next family.  This is a time for you to see if the dogs will fit into your lifestyle.  Each dog will be assigned to a Spokanimal volunteer and will remain with that volunteer throughout the process.  Then, starting at 6pm the adoptions can begin.  While you can start the paperwork process, the dogs will need to remain with their volunteer until they have their turn on the Red CarPET.  Once they appear on the show they can go home and begin their new lives.

After the first 20 adoptions, all standard fees apply.  All adoptions are done at the discretion of Spokanimal.  The non-profit works hard to make sure that each dog and family finds the right fit.  If you can’t make it to the KREM 2 Red CarPET Event we encourage you to visit www.spokanimal.org.
