SPOKANE, Wash. — It is that time of year for holiday shopping and many people avoid the hustle and bustle of stores and just get what we need online.
So how do you know if the site you are shopping on is legit?
You can start by taking a quick peek at the top of the screen. Look for the picture of a lock. When you click on the icon it will tell you it is a secure site and your information is safe.
Another indication is if the web address has an “S” at the end of HTTP in the web address.
"‘S’ means secure, it's a very secure website. You'll see businesses that do exclusively business online they will have that and it will be front and center,” Tyler Russell, a spokesperson with the Better Business Bureau Northwest, said.
The lock will also appear on your phone.
The Better Business Bureau recommends people look up online retailer’s reviews. The Better Business Bureau's website is one place to find out what others have to say about a certain business or website.
"We create business profiles through Better Business Bureau and you can see their rating, you can see what their reviews are like and of course all of our complaints and reviews are vetted. We know there has actually been a customer transaction taken place,” Russell said.
