A Port Townsend couple committed to the Victorian era, was turned away from Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island, because of their clothing.

Gabriel and Sarah Chrisman write on their blog This Victorian Life, that they went to Victoria to celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary. That included a lunch at Butchart Gardens.

The couple showed up for the lunch in Victorian attire, as they typically wear, but say they were told they needed to change, or put on old staff uniforms.

Butchart Gardens does say on its website, "Please note, costumes and period style or historical dress is not permitted in The Gardens."

The couple says their wear is not a costume but what they wear every day.

A spokesperson for Butchart Gardens tells The Times Colonist it's been a 20-year policy to ban costumes, because "it can take away from the experience” for other visitors.
