Mountain Gear in Spokane approaches last day with final sales

The closure includes the physical store at 2002 N. Division St. and its online operations. They plan to have a closing sale Friday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — After 37 years of business in Spokane, the Mountain Gear on North Division Street is entering its last week of outdoor retailing.

It’s been a staple in Spokane for nearly four decades and president of the store, Paul Fish announced last month that all items would be sold at a discounted rate.

“Spokane has been so good to us,” Fish said.

Next Sunday is officially the last day they’ll be open so the reality of a new chapter is beginning to sink in. Since its closing was announced, Fish says the love from the community has poured in and the store has been full of people coming in and out.

Signs representing the discounts were posted all across the store and some items had as much as 70 percent off.

Fish says the final sale his store is having feels almost like a way of saying thank you to Spokane.

“I just want to see you outside using this stuff,” Fish said.

As they close out this last week, Fish says he’s thankful for all of his employees and he’ll try to help everyone get into a new job. On Superbowl Sunday, he’s got plans to take them all out for dinner.
