SPOKANE, Wash. -- Finding the perfect prescription for a healthy diet can be tricky and is different for everybody.
This is why many people are turning to a book called Eating Right For Your Type. The book makes health and nutrition recommendations based on the blood type people inherit from their parents. Scientist and Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Peter D'Adamo wrote the book and said he believed that a person's blood type can determine how they will react to different types of food, habits and stressors.
D'Adamo said he believes people with type O blood benefit and function better from eating a paleo or caveman type diets that are high in meat, oily fish, fruits and vegetables but light on grains, beans and legumes.
D'Adamo said type A's dramatically reduce their risks of cardiovascular disease and other stress related conditions when they cut out meat and incorporate calming exercises like yoga into their lifestyle.
Despite its popularity, the diet has its share of criticism.
Doctors and health experts agreed that people will naturally feel better when they take refined sugars and junk food out of their diets. People's genetics do determine what foods work best for their bodies. Published research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition proved that blood type does not have much to do with what food works best for people's bodies.
Naturopathic physician and founder of the Father Fit Project, Dr. Anthony Balduzzi said getting tested for specific food sensitivities is a better way to create a diet that works best for individuals. He added that even though the diet is moving people towards personalized nutrition, people shouldn't worry about their blood type if they maintain a healthy digestive and immune system and follow a nutrient dense diet.
