Around 2:30 PM Saturday afternoon, my husband and I were driving up skyline drive at McCroskey state park near Potlatch, ID to take our dogs for a walk. I caught a glimpse of light peering straight up the side of the mountain through the trees. An SUV was spotted about 300 feet down the side of the mountain, wedged against a large pine tree. The tree appeared to be the only thing keeping the vehicle from plummeting down the cliff several feet below. The vehicle top was crushed in, the front windshield shattered and other damage noted. We climbed down to offer our assistance. The vehicle was still running and a man was behind the wheel. The man could only answer "no" to questions, his speech was flat and his eyes were fixed and dilated. 911 was called and potlatch emergency service responded to the scene. While Potlatch emergency services used a chainsaw to free the man from the vehicle, Med star was dispatched as the man became unresponsive. A cleared area large enough for med star to land on the top of skyline drive about 1 mile from the site of the accident was located. The Spokane man was flown to Sacred Heart. Accolades to Potlatch EMS rescue and Medstar for their teamwork and fast response. The condition or identity of the spokane man is not known at this time.
