SPOKANE VALLEY -- Valley Christian High School officials elected this week to end their football program.
According to a press release from the school, multiple factors contributed to the decision, including, "the lack of players turning out for the sport and the overall safety of...players."
A Valley Christian football player died in September, 2009 after taking a hard hit during a game. Drew Swank, 16, suffered severe brain injuries and died at Sacred Heart Medical Center days after the game.
The Valley Christian football team continued the 2009 season after Swank's death. However, Wednesday's announcement of ending the program was to allow students the opportunity to play for public schools.
Officials wrote, "VCS is incredibly thankful for all the support the community and other teams gave us during this past season. We wish all the local football teams success in their upcoming season."
