SPANGLE, Wash. -- A school in Spangle is competing for state-of-the-art upgrades and using the power of Facebook to get them.
Upper Columbia Academy, a Seventh Day Adventist school with dormitories, has risen 45 spots in two weeks. As of Tuesday, it reached the 31st position. The school is trying to reach the top 20 vote-getting schools nationwide in the Kohl's Cares education funding contest on Facebook. Kohl's will award $500,000 each to the top 20 schools in the contest.
The school is the only one in Eastern Washington competing for the renovations. The school has 257 students and most of them live on campus. Funds will likely be used to upgrade and/or rebuild the cafeteria and dormitories. $300,000 would be used for a new cafeteria, and the remaining $200,000 to dorms. UCA consistently posts scores above the national average and has a high college attendance rate.
UCA has until Friday, September 3 to get the votes.
