One dead following severe storms in Priest Lake area

PRIEST RIVER, ID—One person is confirmed dead following severe storms in the Priest River area on Friday.

Officials say a wind storm started around 3:30 p.m. damaging the Indian Creek Campground. The campground is operated by Priest Lake State Park.

Officials say power could be out for a week in the area. They are urging people to avoid downed power lines and poles. Anyone who sees them is advised to call the sheriff's office.

Idaho State Police says 66-year-old Gary E. Bierwagen was killed when a tree fell on his Toyota Tundra while he was driving on Pinto Point Road.  People in the area say they saw the victim being taken away in a medical helicopter.

The Department of Lands was on scene Friday evening and Bonner County officials were responding to the scene.

Crews say trees are blocking an unknown number of roads and knocked out power to people all over the lake. The east side of the lake is without power. Northern lights was working on the issue Friday evening. Eastshore Road was blocked by trees.

Witnesses say trees fell over the Indian Creek Campground near Pinto Point Bay. They believe there were injuries.

Authorities have not confirmed any other injuries from Friday storms.
