ST. JOHN, Wash. – A woman dialed 911 as a stranger broke into her home last Wednesday in St. John.
“We have a guy with a gun and he’s robbing us,” she said.
The woman told the dispatcher her husband was fighting with the burglar in the garage as she was on the phone.
“My husband was going to work and someone attacked him.”
When Whitman County deputies responded to the house, they reported finding Michael McCarthy, 47, laying on his stomach in the garage. Local EMT’s arrived before deputies and helped the homeowner zip tie McCarthy, according to court documents.
Prosecuters say police found the homeowners’ belongings on McCarthy, including keys to their SUV.
McCarthy reportedly complained to authorities about being assaulted. In court, he acknowledged he was in a lot of trouble.
McCarthy was charged with residential burglary, theft, assault and vehicle prowling. A superior court judge set his bond at $5,000.
Whitman County investigators have tied McCarthy to four other burglaries in St. John over the past month.
