COLFAX, Wash. -- The family of one of the men arrested in connection to the attack of a Washington State University professor spoke to KREM 2 News.

Matt Soriano made his first appearance in front of a judge Friday in front of his parents. He was arrested in connection the assault but no charges have been filed. The parents of Soriano said this is all a misunderstanding and they're eager for the truth to come out.

Katherine and Rod Soriano said this is a difficult time for everyone involved and they are thinking of Professor David Warner as he recovers from his injuries.  The Soriano's say their son is also concerned about Warner.

"Emotionally he's sad to know what happened, " said Katherine, "he didn't like what happened at all to the professor."

Soriano's parents explained he is friends with Robert Bean, who was also in court today. The two had traveled together to visit Pullman. They said their son knows Madeline Fouts but never met Josh Nantz, who was the third man arrested.

The parents said their son told them the professor's friend Lawerence McDonald is the one who started the fight.

Katherine and Rod said say one of the four suspects said something to McDonald the night of the attack about the way he was talking to Fouts. He said they believed McDonald was going to hit someone first and Professor Warner was going to stop him and it caused the two to fall.

Soriano and Bean were released from custody Friday. If charged are filed, they will be back in court next Friday for arraignment..
