Karl Thompson's defense team is already preparing to start their appeal process for Thursday’s sentencing, but it will likely be a while before they get a day in court.

His attorney Carl Oreskovich plans to file an appeal with the Ninth Circuit Court on Monday.  It's the beginning of a long process.  Oreskovich estimates it will be more than a year before that Court of Appeals will hear their case.

So far the cost to defend Karl Thompson is around $550,000, an expense given to the public.  Taxpayers will continue to pay for Thompson's defense through the appeal's process.

The U.S. Attorney's Office may consider its own appeal of the sentence.  More than four years in prison was about double what they expected, but less than half of what they recommended.  They will consult others on the prosecution team and the family of Otto Zehm before deciding if they want to file their own appeal toward the sentence.

Until then, Thompson will be in custody inside the Federal Bureau of Prisons system.
