SPOKANE, Wash. – Harvey Schluter was born in Chewelah, Wash. on July 2, 1913. On Tuesday, his family and Alpha Omega Tours arranged a surprise tour of Spokane’s historic buildings built in 1913.
“It’s sure a surprise,” Schluter said. “Just can’t believe they could do this much for me.”
“This one I had to keep a secret and it’s been really trying,” Schluter’s wife, Irma, said. “I had to run to the bathroom sometimes so that we could talk without him knowing what was going on. And he never did suspect what was going on.”
Schluter moved to Spokane from Chewelah in 1937, when he got a job as a busboy at The Davenport.
He worked and retired as a barber in Hillyard at a shop named for him, Harv’s Barber Shop.
He and Irma have been married for 70 years.
