SPOKANE--Businesses in Downtown Spokane have noticed a problem, homeless people using their storefronts instead of a restroom.  Now, the City of Spokane is solving the problem by hauling in portable toilets.

The city hopes this idea will not only take care of the current problem businesses are facing but also provide a service many homeless people need.

The three trouble areas are located along 4th street at various points under I-90.  In recent weeks the challenge of having the homeless under the freeway has gotten out of control.

Staff with the city says the recent number of complaints led them to try this idea out.  While the city plans to implement the toilets sometime next week, they’re not sure how long they will keep them there.

Some of the homeless KREM2 News spoke to say it will be another motivation for them to keep their area in order and keep out those who don't want to.

The city says they're not worried about this encouraging a tent city because they have two ordinances about camping and don't see any changes to either in the future.
