SPOKANE -- A man Spokane Police dubbed the South Hill “Grinch” made his first court appearance Monday.
26-year-old Kyle Murphy is charged with residential burglary, after officers said he broke into a number of homes and stole presents right out from under the Christmas trees.
A judge set his bond at $15,000.
On Friday, a neighbor in the 2800 block of South Manito Blvd called police after seeing a suspicious looking man.
Police said they arrived to find Murphy in the backyard of a nearby home. The yard’s back gate was open and the back door glass was shattered. Murphy, who officers said was carrying a bag of presents, was arrested.
The bag included gifts stolen from other homes. Officers matched the suspect’s footprints to those found in three other houses on W. 13th, where other burglaries occurred Friday morning.
Detectives continue to search for some of the property stolen from these victims.
Police booked Murphy into Spokane Co. Jail for residential burglary.
The Department of Corrections already had a warrant out for his arrest for a previous burglary.
Police said Murphy has an extensive record to his name for similar crimes, and was just released from prison after serving time for a prior burglary conviction. Murphy may face additional charges as the investigation continues.
Police advise neighbors to be cautious, especially during the holiday season.
