SPOKANE, Wash.--Crews installed the largest set of solar panels in Eastern Washington recently at Whitworth University.

The set of solar panels came out as a team effort between the school and local supporters. Whitworth staff said it is a rare sight to see solar energy making a difference in our area.

University leaders explored adding a source of solar energy to its campus in the summer of 2012. Tthey decided to install 300 panels on the roof of the school's aquatic center.

University staff said the panels create enough power to supply a small dorm. The solar panels were paid for by Western Renewable Imagery and a private investor. School leaders said Whitworth put up some of its own money but expects to earn that investment back in less than 10 years.

The formal dedication ceremony took place on campus on Friday.
