HAYDEN, Idaho -- The Northern Lakes Fire Department has the only dog in North Idaho certified by the federal government for search and rescue missions.

Pete, a 4-year-old black Labrador retriever, is trained to sniff out a missing hunter or a victim trapped under rubble. He and his handler, Pat Riley, were on stand-by at one point to help the victims of Superstorm Sandy.

The FEMA certification means Pete is the only N. Idaho search and rescue dog that can go to federal emergency scenes.  He has helped out at three of them, but has been on standby to help on countless occasions.
