SPOKANE, Wash. -- Many stores in the Spokane area are selling out of 9 millimeter ammunition.
The White Elephant stores in both the Spokane Valley and on North Division received 5000 boxes of 9 mm rounds between both stores two weeks ago. Both stores are now sold out and even limited the amount of rounds that can be purchased to two boxes per customer.
The General Store and Sharp Shooting Indoor Range and Gun Shop in Spokane are also out of 9 mm.
White Elephant manager Ben Conley and other managers say military and law enforcement receive ammunition from manufacturers before retail stores.
Retailers believe the demand is from gun owners stockpiling in case certain weapons are banned or consumers driven by rumors of background checks or rising taxes on ammunition.
One gun dealer also said small handguns are selling fast because they can be concealed easier with a permit.
