Spokane, Wash. -- Organizers of Hoopfest said they will have other measures of security in addition to police this year.

Hoopfest is expected to draw a crowd of 7,000 teams and around 250,000 people. Security crews are determined not to have another event such as one three years ago when a gang-related shooting rocked Hoopfest. Three people were shot but not seriously injured.

“We found that our plan is very solid. It’s very good,” said Kristin Davis, one of this year’s organizers. “There were areas that we needed to tweak a little bit, but we feel really good about the plan that we have in place. Our partnership with the police department, and we have private security and we have rapid response teams. I mean, we really have a full-scale plan in place and our first priority is the safety of our spectators, our players, our volunteers, everyone who comes down here to enjoy this event.”

Planners said they also hope the high temperatures will be a factor in keeping aggression down this year. The hottest Hoopfest on record in 2008 also recorded a smaller number of fights.
