SPOKANE, Wash.--Hundreds of military families got a holiday treat on Wednesday night courtesy of the railroad.

Burlington Northern Trains hosted its holiday express ride for the sixth year.

Military families were able to hop aboard the hour and a half long train ride and celebrate with treats and meet Santa Clause.

This year’s trip featured around 350 military families from Fairchild.

"It's a way to give back in the communities we serve and also give folks a chance, or actually honor the folks that are paying a big sacrifice by being deployed overseas and giving their families some enjoyment over the holidays,” said BNSF spokesman Zak Anderson.

The program started in Great Falls, Montana and will end in Richmond, California.

"The Christmases you spend away from family make it worthwhile when you're here. You appreciate it a bit more. We've had several family members deployed over the years,” said Air National Guard Serviceman Brian Scott.

It was time to head to the North Pole on Wednesday as the clock struck 4:30 p.m.

The Holiday Express heads to the Tri-Cities on Thursday for another ride.
