Fire in Hillyard leaves 16 people without a home

SPOKANE, Wash.—Spokane Fire crews responded to a three story apartment fire in the Hillyard area around 5 p.m. Sunday.
 
There were 16 people inside the apartment on Olympic and North Regal according to officials. The third floor was on fire and firefighters said they saw heavy smoke coming out of a window. 
 
Authorities said the eight women and eight men were all able to escape safely.They are all staying at a hotel provided by the Red Cross. Two people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. 
 
A cat was killed in the incident.
 
It took crews 30 minutes to put the flames out.
 
The fire department has deemed the building unihabitable until fire and smoke damage along with electrical concerns can be addressed by the building owner.

There were 26 people on scene from the Spokane Fire Department and AMR. Officials said the cause of the fire may have been tripped breakers but the cause is still under investigation.

Fire crews said there is extensive damage to the third floor and one occupants belongings are a complete loss. The basement, first and second floors did not suffer any damage.
