SPOKANE, Wash. -- A former Shadle Park High School teacher pleaded guilty to Fourth Degree Assault with Sexual Motivation Friday morning for his alleged involvement with an underage student. Prosecutors said he bit the bottom of one of his students.
Ryan M. Murphy still faces one more charge of First Degree Sexual Misconduct. Officials said one of his underage students told authorities Murphy bit her on the bottom while they were on a wrestling mat.
The case is not completely resolved with Friday’s hearing. Murphy will be back in court December 9 to enter a plea for his felony charge of First Degree Sexual Misconduct. He will also be sentenced on that day.
Murphy worked as an English teacher and a track coach at the time of his alleged misconduct with a student. Spokane Public School District leaders said that Murphy worked for the district for more than a decade. District leaders allowed Murphy to resign in August of 2012 when the allegations arose. Students said he was the favorite teacher on campus.
Court documents showed that a student admitted to having sex with Murphy. The former teacher allegedly began an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old freshman when he was 40 years old. The student told investigators the pair met at Murphy’s home on Thursdays when his wife was not home for sex. She also told detectives Murphy once picked her up from a teen party and they had sex in his car.
The alleged victim told investigators that Murphy took her to the MAC and met her along Cliff Drive.
The teenager added that they also had sex in Murphy’s car at Woodridge Elementary School. She also told detectives that Murphy gave her letters and gifts.
