Call center lays off nearly 600 employees

SPOKANE, Wash. A Liberty Lake call center announced it will be laying off about 600 employees.

Cities like Liberty Lake want to bring in companies that can offer new jobs to the area. The say it’s important to bring in a diverse group of businesses so everyone isn’t dependent on one industry.
Center Partners, a call center in Liberty Lake, announced it’s laying off 578 employees later this year. That’s disappointing for city leaders who want to keep good jobs in the area.

"Call centers provide good jobs with sustainable income and that is good,” Liberty Lake City Administrator Katy Allen said.

However, the centers do see a lot of turnover. The city of Liberty Lake says they’re proud of the range of companies that call the area home, including tech and retail businesses.

 "This is a balance, certainly call centers have their own niche in the market,” Allen said.

City leaders admit if they only had employers in one field, they would likely see layoffs like the current one more often.

"If you were a community that were or a region that was only 100 percent call centers, you'd have cause for concern,” Allen said.

Moving forward, the city hopes Central Partners will find a way to re-hire the positions they are laying off. The company didn’t say why it’s laying off so many employees, but they will recruit from a variety of fields to stay competitive.

Those 578 layoffs will take place between October and December of this year.
