SPOKANE-- A north central Washington woman has set out on a 9,000 mile journey around the country to replace worn and tattered American flags.
Monday she passed through Spokane County.
The woman left her hometown of Bridgeport, Washington Sunday. If you're flying a worn or tattered flag, she may just end up on your doorstep.
Gale is on a mission she says to spread patriotism throughout the country. On her 2 month journey she's using the name Annie Amerika.
Two years ago Annie's husband, a Vietnam veteran, retired. Annie say john talked about the two of them traveling the country, visiting family and national parks. Along the way he wanted to replace old and dilapidated flags they came across. In November of 2010, john was killed in a car accident
A year a half later, Annie has set out to fulfill his goal. “I’m doing this for him, but I’m also doing this to heal my heart. “
Sponsors donated flags and money towards the cause. Annie started her trip with 81 flags to give away; at least one for each day on the road.
Annie's journey will take her to the east coast, where she plans to leave a picture of john at the Vietnam memorial in D.C. She then will head towards the gulf coast, and onto the pacific before she arrives back home in Bridgeport.
Annie gives old flags she receives to Boy Scout troops so they can properly retire them.
