SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office investigated a body found early Thursday in Spokane Valley. They confirmed it is a woman.
Authorities said a man walking in the 4600 block of East 4th around 8 a.m. saw the body in a field and called police. The man told KREM 2 News the woman was covered in bruises, but that there was no signs of assault.
KREM 2 News also spoke with Joanita Chavez, who claims to have seen the potential homicide victim Wednesday night. She said the woman was "distraught."
"She was sitting down, rocking back and fourth. I think she was scared, looking back," said Chavez.
Witnesses said the field the woman was found in is a popular spot for transients and drug activity.
Authorities said they would investigate the death as a homicide until proven otherwise. There is no word yet on the identity of the victim or the circumstances surrounding the death.
Investigators spent six hours in the area near 4th and Custer searching for clues. The woman's body was taken in by the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
