NBA player Jason Collins came out as being gay to Sports Illustrated Monday, becoming the first athlete in a major American professional sports league to do so while still actively playing.
Collins, a 7-foot center, played this past season with the Washington Wizards. He’s also played for the Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, New Jersey Nets, Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies.
Collins made the revelation in a self-written piece for the May 6 issue. The article was posted online Monday.
“I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay,” Collins writes to start out his story.
Collins said he still wants to play basketball.
