Man Flies Over Gorge with Jet Pack

2008-11-25

It looked like something out of a sci fi movie. Daredevil Eric Scott strapped a hydrogen-peroxide powered jet pack to his back and flew 15-hundred feet across the Royal Gorge Canon in Colorado.

Scott works for Jet P.I. in Denver which has developed the jet packs for stunts, promotions and other events.

The Royal Gorge in southwestern Colorado had a drop of more than one-thousand feet to the Arkansas River below. Scott did the stunt without wearing a parachute. Originally the packs designed by the military could only fly about 20 seconds before stopping. Scott's pack was lighter and able to fly about 33 seconds. He made the 15-hundred foot crossing over the gorge in 20 seconds.

Meteor Streaks Across Canadian Skies

2008-11-24

A large and blinding meteor streaked across western Canadian skies on Thursday, Canadian television reported.

CTV broadcast video filmed from a local police car on patrol, showing a small light turning into a massive and blindingly bright fireball as it fell from the sky and appeared to hit the Earth in the distance.

Police in the province of Alberta received hundreds of telephone calls by awe-struck witnesses of the rare event.

Some people heard a loud "boom" noise in the distance as the meteor struck, Canadian media reported.

Scientists are now searching for remains of the meteor, with some Canadian officials saying the meteor may not have actually touched ground.

Flooding in Colombia

2008-11-24

Flood waters in Colombia forced more residents to flee their homes on Sunday as communities along the swollen Magdalena river counted the cost of weeks of heavy rain.

In the Department of Cesar alone officials report more than 18 million US dollars worth of stock and crops have been destroyed by the flooding.

One man told local media his neighborhood had lost two to three hundred cattle in the floods.

Elsewhere local broadcasters showed dramatic video on Saturday of a landslide wiping out an entire home in Mesitas, in the Cundinamarca Department.

Flood waters also swept through the Atlantico and Tolima Departments on Sunday forcing many residents to abandon their homes.

Local media report weeks of flooding has caused at least 22 deaths in Colombia since September and at least 500 thousand people have suffered damage to their property.

The Red Cross say the heavy rains, which is predicted to continue until mid December, have affected nearly 200 municipalities in 24 of the country's 32 regions, severely damaging tens of thousands of homes.

Underwater Santa in Japan

2008-11-21

An aquarium in Tokyo is entertaining its visitors with an underwater Santa Claus this Christmas.

Diver Ren Takahashi, dressed in a red and white festive suit fed around 30 different kinds of fish in a tank at the Sunshine International Aquarium on Friday.

The seasonal figure descends four times a day to feed the fish shrimp from a box that looks like a Christmas present.

She swims among rays, small sharks, moray eels and sea snakes, which all live in a subtropical climate tank approximately 30 meters (90 feet) wide.

The aquatic animals appear unconcerned by the diver's presence.

During a show on Friday, a normally shy moray eel was enticed from a hole in a rock, and swam with the underwater Santa Claus.

The Sunshine International Aquarium in Tokyo opened in 1978 and exhibits more than 750 aquatic species.

Around 7,000 people visit the aquarium each day.

Kimchi Festival In South Korea

2008-11-20

Thousands of South Korean women gathered on Thursday in front of Seoul City Hall to make Kimchi, the traditional Korean pickle, preparing 58-thousand cabbages to be delivered to needy people ahead of the winter.

Kimchi, a must-have side dish for Koreans, is made of fermented cabbage stuffed with red pepper, garlic, radish and other vegetables.

A large quantity of Kimchi is usually prepared ahead of the winter, the pickle becoming an essential vegetable during the cold months.

The event, part of "2008 Seoul Guinness Food Festival" and co-organized by the South Korean capital and a yogurt company, is trying to break a record of 58-thousand cabbages prepared simultaneously.

Five other major South Korean cities are also participating in the event on Thursday, producing a total of 120-thousand cabbages of Kimchi by 5-thousand participants.

But the Seoul event is the largest in the country and received a certification from the South Korea's Guinness Book of Records.

"This event is a large-scaled event of making Kimchi. We are holding this event aiming to reach South Korea's record with 58-thousand cabbages," said Kim Sung-tae, a spokesman from Cultural Industry Division of Seoul.

However, Kimchi is not registered yet as a category in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Tool Bag Lost in Spacewalk

2008-11-19

Video provided by NASA TV

Spacewalker Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper, arranging tools and work bags before beginning work to clean and lubricate a space station solar array rotary joint, lost a tool kit overboard and along with it two grease guns, a scraper, a debris container and a large trash bag.

When the tool kit floated away, she was struggling to clean up grease inside the bag that somehow leaked out. Flight controllers told her to use tools in fellow spacewalker Steve Bowen's toolkit to replace those that were lost. They may slow the astronauts down a bit - they will be working on opposite sides of the 10-foot-wide solar array drive gear - but they presumably can still accomplish their major objectives.

Locust Swarms in Australia

2008-11-19

Swarms of locusts continued to sweep across rural areas in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) on Tuesday.

A low density swarm could be seen in the NSW central-western district near Condobolin, measuring about 6 km long, and 170 meters wide, said the state government.

Other swarms were spotted near Wagga, Gundagai and Narrandera.

Locusts feed mainly on green vegetation, and this is the time of year when many farmers are preparing to harvest their crops.

In some areas, it is the first precious crop in several years, after many seasons of drought.

The NSW Primary Industries Minister, Ian Macdonald, said about nine planes were on standby to treat the swarms if they grew larger or thicker.

Macdonald said there was no need to panic at this stage.

He says farmers needed to report locust swarms to their local Rural Lands Protection Board.

Sumatran Tigers Born

2008-11-18

Two Sumatran tigers from opposite sides of Australia have mated and produced three cubs at Perth Zoo.

The three cubs, born to eight-year-old Sumatran tiger Setia, made their first public appearance on Monday.

The trio - two males, Jaya and Satri, and a female, Melati - were born on August 20 from a union between Setia and 12-year-old Hari, who was transferred from the Cairns Wildlife Safari Reserve to breed with the Perth-born Setia.

After a two-week program to prepare them for life in the public eye, Perth zookeeper Emma Gateway said the siblings were still very shy, but in private, she said they had already established strong personalities and their own pecking order.

The three cubs will stay at Perth Zoo for at least 18 months before being transferred to new homes in Australia or overseas as part of an international effort to breed more of the species.

The Sumatran tiger is very rare in the wild, and officially classified as critically endangered.

The three cubs are particularly valuable for breeding purposes because neither Hari nor Setia have bred before, so they will be a welcome boost to the gene pool.

There are less than 500 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, and the worldwide captive population stands at 250.

The new cubs, which weighed 500 grams at birth, have flourished, zoo officials said.

After trebling their birth weight in their first 15 days, the boys now weighed in at 9 kg while their little sister is now almost 8 kg.

Hari will return soon to his home in Cairns, Australia.

Amazing Domino World Record

2008-11-17

A new world record for the number of dominoes toppled in one go was set in the Netherlands on Friday night, when according to event organizers, 4,345,027 dominoes fell during a two-hour TV show.

The annual event, which took place in Leeuwarden, was broadcast live in eight countries.

More than 85 people from 13 countries took part in the challenge, which took eight weeks to set up and was a year in the planning.

Acrobat and former Miss Finland, Salima Peippo, toppled the first domino whilst suspended from the ceiling by ropes.

One of the features, which included a small bird flapping its wings, was in memory of a sparrow, which was shot and killed in 2005 moments after it flew into the exhibition hall and knocked over 23,000 dominoes - almost sabotaging that year's record attempt.

Animal rights groups were said to be outraged at the shooting.

The aim of Domino Day 2008 was to break ten world records made in previous years.

In 2007 the team failed to break the record set a year earlier of 4,079,381 dominoes toppled.

Beside the record attempt to topple the most dominoes, there were 10 other record attempts including: the most dominoes stacked on one single domino; the most mini dominoes toppled; and the fastest domino toppling.

All ten records were successfully broken.

According to the organizers the 2008 attempt required 31,167.9 square feet of space, over 250 different types of domino, 300 mechanics, 100 decor pieces, 1500 turning fences and more than 16,404.2 square feet of floor paint.

Squash Drop in OR

2008-11-17

The 2008 Lane County Farmers' Market season in Oregon ended with a thud Saturday. That 'thud' though, was met with a cheer.

Three big squashes met their demise in the market's first-ever squash drop.

The last of the three sent people scambling on the street for tokens and prizes from the street vendors.

One market organizer described it as a kind of 'vegetarian pinata."

Despite the down economy, vendors say it's been a good season.

An endangered sea turtle previously attacked by wild dogs was getting a new lease on life Thursday (11/13).

Veterinarian surgeons removed the flipper and treated the wound at the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital.

Caught on Tape: Child Nearly Falls Down Cliff

2008-11-13

A Kodak moment almost turned into tragedy recently at a popular Oregon coast viewpoint when a small child nearly tumbled over a towering cliff as she posed for a family photo.

The whole incident was captured on home video.

The Pitton family and some cousins were enjoying beautiful summer weather at the popular Ecola State Park overlook along Highway 101 several months ago when they asked several small children to stand against a fence for a photo.

Among them was three-year-old Alaina Pitton, a spunky little blonde girl who took up the position between two other girls.

The Pacific Ocean is in the background but just a few feet being the fence where the girls were standing there was a sheer 150 foot drop down to the rocky shoreline.

As the video camera records the happy scene, little Alaina steps backwards against the fence to pose for the photo and suddenly topples through the gap between the top and bottom fence rails.

She lands awkwardly just inches from the precipice, and grabs onto plants to keep from going over the edge. Craig Wulfer, a relative, quickly hops the fence and scoops her up. She was not hurt.

The fall only lasted a second or two, but the impact of the narrowly averted tragedy has been long-lasting.

Alaina's mother Charlotte Pitton, does not plan to take any legal action, but hopes the parks department would take steps to make the fence safer for small children.

Man Climbs Skyscraper in Jakarta

2008-11-13

Skyscraper climber Alain Robert demonstrated his skill in climbing tall buildings once again, this time in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Wednesday.

Robert scaled a 33-floor building in 45 minutes with his bare hands and without any safety support.

His climb delighted hundreds of watchers and caused a traffic jam.

Robert had originally planned to clamber up another building with 52 floors, but was stopped by Indonesian police because he was not authorised to carry out his climb.

Robert was questioned for a few hours at the police headquarters in Jakarta, before proceeding with his second climb.

Police detained him after he had finished.

45-year-old Robert has scaled more than 70 skyscrapers and tall buildings around the world including the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building, the Sears Tower and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, according to his website.
