SPOKANE, Wash. – With more than 7,000 teams competing at Hoofpest, just about everyone is looking to score a win, and hopefully a championship title.
A team of very talented 5th graders already has already won two Hoopfest championships. Now they are looking for a “three-peat.”
They are the Spokane Stars, four girls who played their first Hoopfest tournament when they were in the second grade. They are finding the older they get, the tougher the competition gets.
“It’s really hard. I’m getting pushed around a lot,” said Samantha Hampton.
In their first game of the tournament Saturday morning, the Stars made shot after shot.
Their coach was on the sidelines, reminding them to drive to the basket, pass the ball, make every shot, and most importantly, to have fun.
“We hustled and ran really hard. And we kicked butt!” said Christelle Simpson.
When the clock ran out, the Spokane Stars got their first “W” of the tournament. They feel like nothing can stop them now.
“I really want to win for the third year, and then next year I want to win for the fourth year," Simpson said.
