SPOKANE – Bernadine Van Thiel, 89, is about to get her lifelong dream granted, thanks to The Twilight Wish Foundation.
Van Thiel and her daughter on their way to Georgia to meet former President Jimmy Carter following a church service this Sunday.
Van Thiel and her husband were active philanthropists in the Spokane area. In the late 1970s, while Carter was president, Van Thiel and her husband focused on protecting valuable farm land in the Five Mile Prairie from development. The two of them even designed a board game to raise awareness about it.
President Carter inspired Van Thiel back then with his forward thinking, and she said he still does to this day. She said she planned to thank Carter for all of his work.
“For a long time I have so admired you as my hero in ecology, in advanced technology, in peace-making,” Van Thiel planned to tell Carter. “So here I am, blessed in every way.”
