SPOKANE, Wash. -- The approval of same-sex marriage in Washington State is creating new tourism opportunities. Inland Northwest tourism leaders are working to attract gay and lesbian couples to travel to the area.
Voters approved same-sex marriage in November. Now business leaders are using the law to attract new clientele.
Visit Spokane CEO, Cheryl Kilday, said they are targeting same-sex couples by featuring Spokane in regional and national LGBT publications.
“We will definitely be expanding from a marketing standpoint,” said Kilday, “they spend more, they also travel more often.”
Businesses like the Double Tree Hotel also joined the new tourism effort.
“Our community is very welcoming, it's not like we have any hurdles to welcome and attract that audience," said Double Tree General Manager Mike McLeod.
Spokane business leaders looking to court the LGBT audience are still deciding on how to advertise. Visit Spokane leaders said those decision will be this summer.
