SPOKANE, Wash. -- A woman trying to shoplift a $6.99 bottle of wine in Spokane smashed it over the head of Hillyard Grocery employee Jason Hill Thursday evening when he confronted her going out the door.

Authorities arrested Makayla Keeney, 29, for allegedly assaulting the clerk around 6:40 p.m. on Thursday near Market and Central. Keeney is in jail for first degree robbery.

Police said the Keeney was shoplifting and ran out of the store. Officers said a man chased her out of the store. Hill said that is when she broke the wine bottle over his head.

"The owner tried locking the door, but it couldn't shut," said Hill, "when I went to grab her she took the bottle and broke it over my face. Then she grabbed pieces of glass tried to chase me, tried to stab me

James Kemple witnessed the entire thing.

"When I started running over here, he grabbed her by her hair and pulled her down and he was trying to restrain her. She was hitting him. He told me to grab her and I went to grab her legs. I got kicked in the face right here," said Kemple

Hill managed to hold the suspect until police arrived.

Officers said the victim suffered a cut to the head but returned to work.
