SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash—The 40th racing season kicked-off at the Spokane County Raceway Saturday with the first of ten mud bog events.

Announcer  OJ Stephens said about 1,000 people came out to watch the races, which is more than were in attendance for opening day in 2013.

In the past, different venues in eastern Washington hosted the mud bog events. Stephens hoped that hosting the events in Spokane would bring in more fans. He said the raceway struggled with low attendance in the past.

“That’s why we’re focusing on large events like featured events, especially on the drag strip this year,” Stephens said.

During previous years, promoters lost their lease at one of the tracks and an operator of the raceway left with unpaid bills. Managers said 2014 would be different.

Staff members at the raceway said they expected to be more involved in planning and promoting events in 2014, including the next round of bog races on May 3rd.
