SPOKANE, Wash.--Newly released crime statistics show an increase in the number of rapes reported to police in Coeur d’Alene in 2013 compared to 2012. Other domestic crimes were up as well.
Different types of crimes decreased.
Police dealt with 75% more rape cases in 2013 than in 2012. Coeur d’Alene residents reported 46 rapes in 2013. That number is up almost 50% from the number of rapes reported in 2011.
Coeur d’Alene police spokeswoman Sergeant Christe Wood said not all of those reports resulted in rape convictions.
Wood attributed the increase to a better sense of awareness among victims and better support systems.
Wood said other domestic crimes increased, including stalking.
However, she also said other crimes decreased. The number of reported burglaries in 2013 dropped more than 16% compared to 2012.
Reported aggravated assaults were on the decline by 14% in 2013. There were no murders in Coeur d’Alene either, marking a five year no murder streak according to an official.
