SPOKANE, Wash. -- Three separate collisions near Northtown Mall, all around the same time, left one person dead and created a traffic mess on Division Sunday.
The crashes completely shut down a northbound stretch of the roadway and most of the southbound lanes for hours. The road was opened up again shortly before 5:30 Sunday evening.
The accidents all happened around 1:45 p.m., according to Police. Investigators say the crashes were unrelated.
Two involved minor injuries. A third collision, at Division and Crown, killed one driver.
Police say the driver who was killed was traveling in the northbound lanes when the vehicle crossed over the median and struck an oncoming vehicle in southbound traffic. The northbound vehicle then careened into a pole.
The driver of that car was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say a medical condition may have caused the person to hit the accelerator and stray over the median. The driver in the southbound vehicle suffered minor injuries.
Police shut down all northbound lanes of Division and all but one southbound lane from Wellesley to Rowan while they investigated.
Major Crimes Detectives were called to the scene to investigate all three crashes.
