SPOKANE – Spokane firefighters gave KREM 2 News an exclusive look behind the fire lines of Monday’s Government Way Fire.
The fire burned five acres. It was fully contained Tuesday.
Officials said crews faced a number of challenges, but they were able to contain the fire without any injuries or damage to nearby buildings.
The area is private land that had a lot of fuels like trees, needles, and overgrown brush. The area is also on a hill, so the flames spread easily.
Firefighters described a wall flames. Burn marks on trees indicate the flames reached at least six feet in the air.
About 100 firefighters worked to put the fire out by hand. Crews did not have any air support because their resources were being used to fight other fires.
Firefighters expect many of the trees that were scorched to die, and that will change the view in the area.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
