SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash.--Detectives revealed Thursday that their work is paying off in Spokane County. The Sheriff said detectives have solved all but one Spokane area murder in the last nine years.

Deputies said they are still trying to solve the Catherine Avis murder from 2004. Her decomposing body was found south of Valleyford.  Detectives still do not know how Avis died, but they do know she was murdered. Some of Avis’ belongings were found and turned into police before she died.

“The purse is a critical piece of evidence in this case,” said former Spokane County Sheriff Mark Sterk.  “We're very interested in knowing the exact location where this purse was found.”

Detectives said the case still haunts them but there has not been an unsolved murder since Avis died.

“It’s the dedication of the individuals who work for this community,” added Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich.  “That unit takes their job very very serious.”

Knezovich said it shows in every single case that the Major Crimes unit receives.

“There are times they'll work 24 hours straight before they shut down,” he added. “We have a dedicated group of individuals who are going to find out who you are; they're going to arrest you.”

Detectives made arrests in 28 murders since 2008.
