SPOKANE-- The emergency communication center played a vital roll last week when a gunman shot two Spokane Deputies last week.

KREM 2's Katie Utehs went behind the scene to show how the communications center helped improve the response time.

In the past, dispatch for each agency was spread all over the county. Last week was a test for the combined system. It showed having all departments in one location pays off during emergencies.

The Spokane County Communication Center now has a steady click. It's a far cry from nearly a week ago when two deputies were shot and the gunman took law enforcement on a high speed chase across the county.

Dispatchers with 911, fire, police and the sheriff's office hurried to coordinate crews in the field.

Around a dozen dispatchers with police and sheriff relayed information efficiently, helping officers get to a half dozen scenes in short time.

Last Tuesday is an example of how bringing the dispatch centers into one building has paid off.

The different departments can walk to each other if the phone lines are busy and modern technology speeds up everything

Its saving money because four agencies are all under one roof as opposed to spread across the county.

The dispatch managers don't just measure it in cost savings. They say the efficiencies from being under one roof, add up to seconds and minutes that save lives.
