SPOKANE, Wash. -- The impact of Gonzaga University’s continuous appearances at the NCAA tournament can be felt in the GU Admission’s Office.

University staff said the success of the men's and women's basketball programs has helped with recruitment. It makes a positive first impression to potential future students said Dean of Admission Julie McCulloh.

"It has allowed us in the Office of Admission to cast a wider net, to see greater interest and greater inquires,” added McCulloh.

The number of students applying to join Gonzaga’s freshman class has more than doubled from 1999 to 2012. Out of state enrollment also increased in recent years. McCulloh estimated that out of state students made up 43% of the student body in 1999. She said that number is now at about 50%.

"We find that students like to go to schools with exciting student life programs," said McCulloh.

Admission’s officers also saw an increase in diversity as the basketball program has grown.
