CHEWELAH, Wash.—Hundreds of skiers hit the slopes for opening day at 49 Degrees North on Sunday.
Employees said it is one of the busiest opening days they have had in years. The mountain usually does not open until Thanksgiving.
Resort employees announced the early opening on Saturday after getting a significant amount of snow. It snowed 10 inches on the base and 15 inches at the summit on Saturday.
About 400 people showed up to the mountain on Sunday to ski.
"Oh man it's great. Basically thought about here all summer. I love the snow and it's my favorite place to be. Today was the first day of happy times,” said snowboarder Jason Hershey.
The resort had 14 of their total 82 runs open. Employees said they plan on opening more lifts and runs in the next week if they get the snow they are expecting.
The resort will close for a few days during the week and reopen for the rest of the season on November 22.
