SPOKANE, Wash. -- A Whitman County man was sentenced to 27 years in prison for murder Friday afternoon.
Prosecutors said Daniel Lazcano and his brother Frank shot and killed Marcus Schur two years ago.
During Lazcano’s sentencing, he cried as he apologized to the victim’s family.
“I’m sorry that this tragedy happened and how long it’s been dragged out for everyone,” said Lazcano.
Schur’s mother also spoke before the judge handed down Lazcano’s sentence.
“My son needs justice. Society is so terrible. And I think we need to set an example,” said Grace Schur.
Daniel Lazcano was found guilty of First Degree Murder on December 18 during his third trial. The first two trials in Whitman County ended in a mistrial. Then, the venue was changed to Spokane.
Authorities said they found the body of Marcus Schur in Whitman County’s Bonnie Lake in the winter of 2011. Investigators found the rifle used to murder Schur under the T.J. Meenach Bridge in Spokane in September. The Whitman County Sheriff said the investigation shows the brothers had a motive to kill Schur after he allegedly stole from their home.
Frank Lazcano is serving 25 years in prison for first-degree murder.
Daniel Lazcano’s attorney plans to appeal his sentence.
