SPOKANE, Wash. -- Delbert Belton’s immediate family started a donation fund at Wells Fargo in Downtown Spokane shortly after his death.
Just after the donation fund was set up, another fundraising effort came out that has people wondering where the money is really going.
Cheyanne Brown Campbell, 13, said she turned to Facebook to raise money for Belton’s funeral costs. She said she knew Belton like a family member but she’s not actually related to him.
“I met him when I was a baby. We were all he had. He asked me to call him grandpa,” said Campbell.
Now, some are questioning her intent but she and her family their intentions are pure.
“It’s not all about blood. Cheyanne is a granddaughter in his heart, and her heart, and our family’s heart,” said Cheyanne’s mother, Kimberly Brown.
Delbert’s son and daughter-in-law have been handling official funeral arrangements and say they know nothing about Cheyanne or her fundraising campaign.
Campbell said once she found out Delbert was getting a military funeral, she decided to simply donate whatever she gathers to the family’s Wells Fargo fund in Downtown Spokane.
