Parents hope others will learn from this

SPANAWAY, Wash. – What started with a street race ended with one driver dead and another who could now face criminal charges.

The two men were from the same town and are near the same age, but police say they didn’t know each other. They just made eye contact at an intersection and the race was on.

About 50 people gathered Tuesday evening along the road where 19-year-old Cameron Harbin died in a horrific car crash.

"I think I had a dream like this and I always wondered. I see stories about people losing their kids and how they could handle it. And now I'm in it,” said Lance Harbin, Cameron's dad.

Police say Cameron and a 20-year-old Spanaway man were racing down 128th Street East Monday night, going at least twice to three times the speed limit.

Cameron lost control and rolled his car several times.

"They're both equally at fault as far as I can see. They both put their feet on the gas,” said Lance Harbin.

Cameron graduated from Spanaway Lake High School. His family says he loved cars, grew up racing motocross with his younger brother, Derek.

"He took Derek fishing, he took him motocross racing, he took him skating, he did all those things with him,” said Debbie Sharp, Cameron’s step-mother.

Now these parents hope others will hear their message and heed the warning.

"They're not impressing anybody. Nobody is impressed by what they're doing. All they’re going to do is hurt themselves or somebody else and look what happened here,” said Lance.

Cameron Harbin lost his life Monday evening.

And his mother hopes her other son will learn from the loss.

"I hope he can become a stronger person because of this, that he can learn from this and not make the same mistakes,” she said.

The other driver may have escaped with his life but police say he could still face charges from reckless driving to negligent homicide.
