KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho-- A deadly wreck closed part of Highway 41 closed Thursday afternoon. Authorities at the scene confirmed that one man died during the crash between a semi hauling logs and a Prius.
Idaho State Police shut down the roadway near West Seasons Road just north of Rathdrum.
Authorities said the Prius driver was traveling northbound on Highway 41 when he crossed the center line and hit the semi head-on. The Prius driver, Brian E. Thompson at the scene. ISP said the 50-year-old victim was from Vancouver, Washington.
The impact caused the logging truck to spill its load onto the roadway. The fuel tank also ruptured on the semi and caught fire according to ISP.
The semi driver managed to escape the burning cab.
A third vehicle managed to swerve and avoid the wreck, but crashed into a tree according to authorities. ISP said the pick-up truck driver was not seriously hurt.
Investigators do not know what caused the Prius driver to cross the center line.
